I spent my early childhood in a small fishing town in N. Ireland, and came to England when my parents moved to Watford in 1948. I was educated at Watford Grammar School. I came to live in Selsey with my wife Pam shortly after we were married in 1963; our children, and grandchildren, were raised and educated in the town. My wife and I were proprietors of a small retail business in Selsey until we retired in 2004. In April 2007 I stood down after seventeen years operational service with the Selsey Lifeboats. In 2002 I received the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal for my work with the emergency services; in 2006 I received the Freedom of the City of London for my service with the Selsey Lifeboats. I was elected to Chichester District Council as a Member for Selsey North Ward in May 2007, and held the post of Cabinet Member for the Environment from June 2009-May 2015.
